What is a Meta Description?
Transcript from Video:
Hi, I’m Geoff from Leapfrog Internet Marketing. What is a meta description?
A meta description from a website is a piece of HTML code that is called meta name description that describes the content on the page. And it’s there really to help search engines like Google understand the content on your page. But it’s also there as a mini sales pitch to people looking for your website on Google. The meta description is actually shown in the Google search results below the meta title. So this is a meta description. Even though the meta description is not a direct ranking factor, i.e. it directly influences your position on Google and actually, Google only uses your meta description less than 10% of the time.
It sometimes chooses its own meta description, it’s still really, really important to make sure you write a meta description to help Google understand your content and encourage people to click on your listing rather than your competitors above and below you. And if you can actually write some killer meta descriptions, that will really help your Google rankings over the medium to long term. And that hopefully helps you understand what exactly a meta description is.
